I (Melanie) started Makers Who Blog to minimize my reliance on social platforms for finding inspiration. I love seeing how other people approach their personal projects, and wanted to connect our communities in our own spaces.
Why blog?
When you share on your own website, you're in total control: you decide how your projects are presented and when your followers (of your blog feed, in this case!) see your posts. You can work with whatever media, format, and aesthetic makes sense to you—rather than appeasing The Algorithm's latest engagement whim.
Blogging on your own website means you participate in the open web. By sharing generously and openly, you help nudge internet culture towards something calmer, kinder, and more interesting. You never know who you might help: it could be that person who wants to know if this specific A5 notebook will fit in this case (true story), or you might jog your own memory when returning to a pattern (also a true story).
How to start
- Set up a website with a blog. Even if you don't code, there are many options to choose from, such as Squarespace, Webflow (disclaimer: my current employer), or Wordpress. Leaflet is an interesting newer platform that connects blogs socially.
- Add a custom domain to make your website truly feel like yours.
- Start documenting the things you make! When in doubt, write for yourself. And don't stress “originality”: we all have a unique voice and perspective to contribute, even on the same topics or patterns.
- Follow and read other blogs using an RSS feed reader, such as Feedly (free plan) or Reader by Readwise (my current reader).
